We are at the beginning of March Madness – that special time of year when brackets become the score card and co-workers watch college basketball with intense scrutiny.
What in the world could 48 hygiene kits and $880 have in common with March Madness?
As it turns out – a lot!
Impact 365 is the Community Service initiative of Shields Legal Group. In 2016, we decided to use the energy (and money) generated from March Madness brackets to create hygiene kits for homeless children. The kits are distributed by Hope Supply Company to local homeless children who don’t even have a toothbrush or washcloth to use.
“Raising money and creating these hygiene kits for Hope Supply Company always make me pause,” mused Jim Shields. “I think about the child who will receive these items and I know that I have made a difference in someone’s life.”
This year, we decided to add something new to the hygiene kits. Instead of shoe boxes, we found plastic containers with lids that could hold the toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, deodorant, hair brush and hair accessories. The plastic containers are much more durable and provide a tangible bit of permanence for these children.
The hygiene kit supply drive is part of a larger project organized by Entrepreneurs for North Texas (EFNT). Their member companies also participated in this drive and the overall impact for children who find themselves homeless in our community is impressive. Shields Legal Group is proud to have contributed to this overall effort.
Shields added, “We can’t solve the homeless problem in Dallas, but we can support these children by providing them personal items. It’s about maintaining dignity and letting them know that someone cares about them.”
What have you done today to impact someone’s life?
It doesn’t take much…just consistent effort that is focused on a need.
